Apollo Kolkata: World-Class Cancer Care | Dr. P. N. Mohapatra, Director of Medical Oncology

In a recent interview, Dr. P.N. Mohapatra, Director of Medical Oncology at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals Kolkata, elaborated on how they are making the dream of having world-class cancer care in Kolkata a reality. He highlighted the hospital's separate units for Daycare, Inpatient, and Outpatient services, alongside a well-equipped Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Step-Down Unit (SDU) Dr. Mohapatra further emphasised that the ICU and SDU facilities at the hospital are on par with global standards.

With a team of four medical oncologists and two clinical oncologists, including one junior consultant and one associate consultant, the cancer department is well equipped to handle critical cases, pointed out Dr. Mohapatra. ‘The Chemotherapy Daycare Unit also has dedicated physicians, and supportive care is offered for inpatient and outpatient services’, he added.

Within the hospital's Medical Oncology department, there is a dedicated Molecular Oncology and Immunotherapy setup that uses Molecular Profiling and Next-Generation Sequencing to enhance cancer treatment. Dr. Mohapatra emphasises that this approach allows doctors to tailor medication to each patient's unique requirements. ‘Targeted Oncology and Immuno-oncology are the new frontiers in cancer treatment. This hospital also offers Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Critical Care, Radio-Oncology, Haematology, and Pathology facilities’, he listed.

Another remarkable aspect of this hospital is their Diplomate of National Board (DNB) programme. A teaching hospital, Apollo Hospitals Kolkata enrols two students annually for the DNB course, making it one of the first 10 hospitals in Kolkata to offer it.

Combining all these services, Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals offer truly comprehensive oncology care. Dr. Mohapatra concluded with pride, ‘In the realm of cancer care, Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals in Kolkata can rival even the top hospitals in the world’.
