Golden Hour: Insights by Dr. Supratip Kundu

Dr Supratip Kundu, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at HP Ghosh Hospital, elaborated on the concept of Golden Hour for the benefit of the general public. He stated, “Compared to other countries, India has a significantly higher number of people suffering from heart diseases. This is due to a combination of genetic factors, as well as the current lifestyle and dietary habits. As a result, people in India tend to experience heart attacks at least 10 years earlier than those in other countries. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of the symptoms of a heart attack, the reasons why it occurs and the immediate steps to take when a heart attack happens. Most importantly, understanding the concept of the Golden Hour is crucial.”

Dr Kundu elaborated, “The period of one to one and a half hours after a heart attack is referred to as the Golden Hour. Therefore, if you suspect a heart attack based on symptoms, it is essential to immediately visit the nearest hospital for an ECG. If the ECG confirms a heart attack, primary angioplasty can be performed to completely cure the patient. That's why this Golden Hour is extremely crucial.”
