The Stage Door Theatre Studio of Kolkata presented a powerful and thought-provoking production of "Rangapeeth" on Saturday, March 30th at the Academy of Fine Arts. Directed by Rijita Chatterjee, the play explored the complex relationship between art, society, and political power.
"Rangapeeth" served as a mirror reflecting the dynamics between artists (kalakaar jaat), audiences (darshak jaat), and the political realities that surround them. The play questioned the ability of both artists and audiences to truly challenge the status quo and ignite social change.
Drawing inspiration from a recent disturbing news article about a brutal attack, the production delved into the artist's role in responding to social injustices. The play emphasized the power of artistic expression to raise awareness and spark critical thinking.
Rijita Chatterjee, the play's writer and director, stated, "Theatre is a platform for exploring uncomfortable truths. 'Rangapeeth' aimed to inspire audiences to go beyond simply watching and to ignite a spark of knowledge and understanding.
"The play's success was bolstered by the creative team's contributions. Scriptwriter Sumit Sarkar, along with the Stage Door team, crafted a compelling narrative. Bilu Dutta's set and costume design brought the story to life, while Sasanka Mondal's lighting design and the collaborative musical composition by Soumitra Banerjee, Kundan Mondal, and Amit Banerjee further amplified the emotional impact.
"Rangapeeth" received a standing ovation from the captivated audience. The play's exploration of social issues, combined with its artistic execution, left a lasting impression on those who attended.
