Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and in India. One in four women with cancer across the world and in our country are diagnosed with breast cancer. Every year nearly 1,80,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in India and around 90,000 women die of the disease.
The incidence of breast cancer is increasing in all countries of the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women in Kolkata and accounts for 25.4% of all cancer cases in women. This means every fourth cancer detected in a woman in Kolkata will be breast cancer. Breast cancers in LMICs are frequently detected in advanced stages, and consequently, more than half the global deaths from breast cancer occur in these countries. Proper Clinical Examination & Mammography are the standard screening techniques for early detection of breast cancer, used widely in the Western world.
“Creating a women-friendly breast cancer department involves designing a supportive and comfortable environment that caters to the unique needs and concerns of women undergoing breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care.
The theme of Narishakti is – A One-Stop Breast Cancer Detection & Treatment Centre for all Women by Women specialist Doctors – Oncologists, Breast Onco-Surgeons, Breast Radiologists. Also, to mention that our mammography technicians are ladies as well as the nursing staff, thus ensuring end-to-end privacy. Private, comfortable, dignified spaces have been designed for consultations, examinations, and discussions, allowing intimate emotional support during challenging times.
The overall incidence of cancer has increased by almost 80% among the ‘below 50’ population across the world in the last 3 decades, and Breast Cancer accounts for the highest number of this shift. Thus, the paradigm that cancer occurs in the elderly age has changed to cancer happening in the middle & younger age groups.
