A recognized name in the educational and healthcare sectors of India, the founder and Chancellor of NIMS University Rajasthan, Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar has been appointed as the International President of the World Health Summit. This appointment not only recognizes Prof. Tomar's exceptional leadership and contributions but is also a significant achievement for NIMS University and the country altogether.
This is the first time that an Indian will represent as an International President at the World Health Summit. The chief patrons of the summit are Olaf Scholz- Chancellor of Germany, Emmanuel Macron- President of France, and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus - World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General.
The World Health Summit is the International Forum for Global Health. It brings together politics, science, and the private sector from around the world to set an agenda for a healthy future by inspiring better health and development for all. It promotes global health as a major political issue and brings global health debate in the spirit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
With his exemplary leadership and wide experience in the field of health care, education and administration, Prof. Tomar is set to take the organization to new heights of success and impact. The World Health Summit will be held from 13 to 15 October 2024 in Berlin, Germany. NIMS University has also received membership in the M8 Alliance (a group of international health universities that organizes the “World Health Summit” in Germany every year).
The global platform recently praised Prime Minister- Shri Narendra Modi and Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for India's development outlook, their comprehensive strategy for managing COVID-19 in India and “Vaccine Maitri”, availability of beds, essential medicines, N-95 masks, and PPE. The 79-member African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group and the 15-member Caribbean Community praised India at the World Trade Organization (WTO) for facilitating vaccine supplies to those in their hour of need. India was praised for the 'Vaccine Under the 'Maitri or Friendship' initiative, 36.37 million vaccine doses have been supplied to 35 countries and UN health workers.
Prof. Tomar expressed happiness over the selection of India as the host country for the World Health Summit 2025 and highlighted the country's expertise in knowledge, science and developmental aspects. He stressed that this decision is not only a matter of immense pride but also an important responsibility. In alignment with Vision@2047, Prof. Tomar underlined India's pledge to green development and tackling climate change. He expressed plans to increase self-reliance in defence and space sectors, enhance India's global stature, boost renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions.
As preparations begin for the World Health Summit 2025, India has an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to encourage partnerships, share knowledge and take action towards achieving universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. This Health Summit will serve as a platform for researchers to showcase their expertise, exchange ideas and chart a course for a healthy future. At the heart of this vision will be the preservation of India's rich cultural heritage and identity, as well as proactive efforts to address serious global challenges such as climate change and promote peace and cooperation on the world stage.
In the year 2023, NIMS University Rajasthan acquired the position in the executive body of the 'World Health Conference' - M8 Alliance and is one of only 31 medical centres and institutions in the world that holds membership within the M8 Alliance. It should be known that the “Inter Academy Partnership” represents the National Medicine Academies of more than 100 countries.

About Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar
Prof.(Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar is a well-known name in the medical and health field not only in India but also abroad for his versatile individuality. A world-renowned pediatrician, Prof. Tomar is also quoted as the “Father of Pediatric Gastroenterology” for his contributions to research for the cure of Indian Childhood Cirrhosis. He has also been honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in the field of pediatrics and gastroenterology.
His extraordinary work ethic, keen insight and astonishing talent make him a standout in the health sector, Dr. Tomar has worked across the country and worldwide combining traditional and modern medical practices for health care. He started his career at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Rajasthan. He holds the position of Director of the Institute of Organ Transplant, Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology as well as President of the Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Transplant and Nutrition.
