CCTV cameras with a centralised monitoring system will be set up soon at the state’s largest government-run hospital, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), state director-general of police K.N. Choubey said on Thursday after holding a security audit of the campus.

This comes a day after chief minister Raghubar Das directed the DGP to take charge of the security of the 1,500-bed hospital with 3,000 people a day visiting the outpatient department. Das had also asked Choubey to depute cops on RIMS campus as needed to beef up hospital security.

ADG (operations) Murarilal Meena, DIG Chhotanagpur range A.V. Homkar, Ranchi SSP Anish Gupta, Ranchi SP Sujata Kumari Veenapani and RIMS director Dinesh Kumar Singh were with Choubey during his 90-minute inspection.

“The state government has a clear vision, RIMS must be developed as a hospital of national repute. Security is a key parameter of the whole exercise, which is why our security audit,” Choubey said.

Choubey said CCTV cameras would be put up at important points — access gate, road, parks — on RIMS campus.

“A centralised control unit at RIMS will monitor the CCTV cameras. Now CCTV cameras are affordable. We will depute a senior police officer as the overall in-charge of the security. We’re mulling deployment of police personnel. Currently, RIMS has private security guards,” he said.

The state DGP pointed out the boundary wall of RIMS that is damaged at several places and asked RIMS director Singh to get it repaired.

Touching briefly on threats to hospital security by patients’ attendants, the DGP called it a sensitive issue.

While stressing on security, the DGP also went to the heart of the matter. “Only three kinds of people visit here (the hospital), doctors, patients and attendants. Doctors save lives, patients and their attendants stay anxious. These issues need sensitive handling.”

Unhappy with the overall cleanliness of RIMS, at one point Choubey said: “RIMS should be cleaner than any other place of the capital.”

He reviewed the parking arrangements, visited the not-yet-functional police outpost near the trauma centre and barracks of the Special Auxiliary Police, residential part of RIMS, trauma centre, cardiology, oncology and dental units and paying wards.

Coming down strongly on middlemen, the DGP was heard asking the RIMS director: “Tell me who the goons are and we will deal with them.”

Doctors’ meeting

The CM’s Wednesday directive for an ACB probe into the private practice of RIMS doctors has not gone down well with doctors. The RIMS Teachers’ Association will hold a meeting on Saturday on the matter, sources have said.
