“Three of the five had entered the shop on Saturday evening around 8pm while two were outside,” said a cop of the Lalpur police station, which has jurisdiction over the area.

“As the three entered the shop brandishing their firearms, around eight staff of the store swung into action instead of getting scared. The robbers had not expected such action and they tried to flee. Two managed to flee while one was nabbed by the employees. A revolver was recovered from his possession. Information was sent to police, who later arrested four,” the policeman added.

Lalpur police station officer in-charge (OC) Arvind Kumar Singh said the gang was a big catch.

“Those arrested admitted involvement of their gang in loot of Bandhan Bank of Motihari in Bihar. Four, who were arrested by late night (on Saturday), were trying to leave the city and wanted to go Hajipur. We recovered one 9mm pistol, one revolver and two country-made single shot small gun with 15 rounds of ammunition,” Singh told The Telegraph.

OC Singh said the gang had rented a house in Bandhgari 25 days ago.

“They had planned to leave the city after committing the robbery but their plan failed due to the shop staff’s courage,” Singh said. “The senior police superintendent has announced that they will be recommended for an award.”

On October 14 last year, brothers Rohit Kheriwal and Rahul Kheriwal where shot at and injured in their jewellery shop at Lalpur Chowk under Lalpur police station area.

The police are yet to arrest anyone in that case despite pressure from the business community.

“After this gang’s arrest, it is expected that several cases of loot at jewellery shops in the city will be solved,” OC Singh said.
