Vehicular traffic will remain partially closed through Jai Prakashan Narayan Setu over Subernarekha along Mango for about a month from Sunday morning. Restriction in the vehicle movement is being followed over the important road-bridge as it needs urgent repair.
During the repair work which is scheduled to be carried out by Tata Steel's ancillary Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services - JUSCO round the clock from Sunday morning one of the two lanes of the bridge remain open for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four wheelers during day and night.
Heavy vehicles will be allowed to pass through the single lane during the night only. The heavy vehicles including the buses may pass through the Domuhani bridge connecting to NH-33 through Marine Drive. A decision to this effect was taken by district administration at a meeting of administrative officials, including the deputy superintendent of police (Traffic) Kamal Kishore on Saturday.
"Set up in the year 1995, the Jai Prakash Narayan Setu better known as Mango bridge has developed gapping at five points. As it is unsafe to ride through such road-bridge, we have decided to get the damaged portions keeping by engaging the utility company JUSCO, " said Kamal Kishore while addressing a press conference on Saturday.
The DSP (Traffic) pointed out beside Mango bridge, the old bridge that exists nearby will also be repaired during this period, but in phases.
Additional district magistrates (Law and Order) Nand Kishore Lal who was ala present at the press conference said as the move to put up restrictions on a busy bridge like Mango bridge is bound to create difficulties for the commuters, the administration will go for an awareness campaign through posters and pamphlets so that vehicle-riders may determine the alternative route they should follow.
"Awareness campaign will be carried out not only through posters and pamphlets, but we have instructed the traffic department to engage adequate number of traffic cops at strategic location so that people may not to have to face hardship while negotiating the bridge.
