Over 100 outsourced medical workers are all set to lose their jobs as Covid-19 cases considerably dropped in the steel city and around.

The outsourced medical workers had been engaged in the Covid wards at the government-run hospitals and also an exclusive Covid hospital set up by the East Singhbhum district administration about a year ago.

As the number of Coronavirus positive cases on daily basis has come down to one or two, the authorities of the government-run hospitals have started admitting the non-Covid patients in the Covid wards.

As a result of the development, the service of the outsourced medical workers is no more required. Elaborating on it, East Singhbhum district civil surgeon, AK Lal said that currently only two Covid patients are admitted in the Covid ward of the MGM medical college hospital and no Covid patient is admitted in any of the remaining hospitals.

"As the Covid cases have dropped drastically, we have started admitting non-Covid patients in the Covid wards. Moreover, as there is no need of services from the outsourced staff engaged for Covid treatment, the health department has sent a circular to remove all such workers, " said Lal while talking to The Telegraph Online.

The civil surgeon informed that they had set up 50 beds Covid wards each at Khasmahal Sadar Hospital and Ghatsila sub-divisional hospital respectively, beside setting up a 90 beds Covid hospital at Kantilal Gandhi Memorial Hospital (KGMH) in Bistupur.

Lal stated that they have stopped the Covid treatment facility from the KGMH and handed over the space to the KGMH trust on Thursday.

In all these three Covid treatment facilities, over 100 outsourced workers were engaged. These workers used to render their service for the treatment of the Covid patients and also carrying out sample collection work. According to sources, these outsourced staff would work at various capacities and would get on an average Rs 9,000 as monthly salary.
