A local court on Wednesday turned down a police petition to take BJP’s Baghmara MLA Dhullu Mahto on remand in connection with a land dispute case.
The case was lodged against Dhullu by Rajeev Srivastava, nephew of former mines minister O.P. Lal, on March 2 with Barora police.
The plea was rejected by the court of first class judicial magistrate Sangeeta, where Dhullu had surrendered in connection with a case of rioting and attempt to murder lodged against him by Irshad Alam, a businessman from Muzaffarpur in Bihar.
Dhullu is in jail since May 11. The prosecution had filed a plea seeking two days of police remand for Dhullu to interrogate him.
A panel of lawyers led by S.N. Mukherjee, who opposed the remand petition, claimed the case didn’t involve a heinous crime such as murder or dacoity and there was no valid reason for remand. Mukherjee reasoned that the case seemed to be politically motivated.
