The Council of the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) announced its Class X and Cass XII examination results on Friday with the honours evenly spread between boys and girls in Jharkhand.
While Class X boys did better than girls in ICSE, Class XII girls outperformed boys in ISC in Jharkhand this year. Among 12,505 students who appeared for ICSE, 52.68 per cent boys passed the exams, compared to 47.32 per cent girls. For ISC, out of 4,515 candidates, the pass percentage for girls was 51.36 against 48.64 for boys. Only 34 ICSE and 208 ISC candidates could not clear the exams from Jharkhand.
"This year has been an exceptionally difficult year for everyone due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the multiple national and state lockdown, coupled with many other related problems,” noted CISCE chief executive and secretary Gerry Arathoon. “Despite all odds, CISCE has successfully completed the evaluation of ICSE and ISC Year 2020 examinations answer scripts," he said in a press statement.
Like every year, the council announced the results at 3pm by making it available on the website, www.cisce.org, and through a messaging service. But as announced earlier, it did not publish a merit list for either of the examinations.
ICSE and ISC examinations started in February but had to be stopped midway due to the nationwide lockdown from March 25. Although the council first rescheduled the remaining papers in July, they had to be cancelled after some states expressed their inability to hold examinations in view of the serious nature of the pandemic.
The council decided to calculate the final marks based on schools’ internal assessments, past performance of students using a special formula devised by it after consulting senior statisticians of the country. The formula has been published in the CISCE website.
For ICSE, exams could not be held in geography, Hindi, biology, economics, applied art and an elective paper. For ISC, exams could not be held in biology, business studies, geography, psychology, sociology, home science, elective English and art.
Jharkhand has 109 ICSE and 49 ISC schools. Jamshedpur has 32 CISCE schools, Ranchi 24, followed by Dhanbad, which has 13 CISCE schools. Bokaro has two schools and Hazaribagh one. Remaining 37 schools are spread across other districts of Jharkhand.
Around 6,000 students appeared for ICSE and ISC from Jamshedpur, while around 4,000 students appeared from Ranchi. Around 2,500 students appeared from Dhanbad.
"This year has been difficult. The council calculated the scores of the remaining papers based on a special formula which considers the average of the best three subjects (already appeared) plus the marks scored by a student in the internal assessment," said principal of Rajendra Vidyalaya Rakhi Banerjee here.
Principal of DBMS English School, Jamshedpur, Rajani Shekhar said the results were satisfactory even though it was delayed due to the lockdown. The council has not published a merit list, but schools have tabulated the results to prepare a list of toppers.
"We have tabulated the data so that we know the toppers of our school. The council has given the scores and schools only have to add them based on the ‘English plus best three’ formula to get the percentage," said Sister Sandra, principal of Carmel School, Dhanbad.
