Close on the heels of producer-director Karan Johar’s rant about the release date of an upcoming big budget film clashing with his action entertainer Yodha, filmmaker Onir has taken a dig at “big Bollywood” banners for allegedly depriving small budget films of the limited shows they need in theatres in order to survive.
“Big Bollywood releases get so upset when there is another big budget release the same day and they talk about how we should all care for each other in the industry, but don't think for a second when they deprive a small budget indie film of a tiny number of good shows to survive,” the Pine Cone director tweeted.
On Monday, immediately after the announcement of Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Merry Christmas clashing with Yodha at the box office, Karan vented his frustration on Threads.
“Clashing on a date without the courtesy of a phone call is hopefully not the way forward for the studios and producers …. If we don’t stand united in these tough and challenging theatrical days then calling us a fraternity is futile….” he wrote.
Yodha, produced by Karan's Dharma Productions, is an action film starring Sidharth Malhotra, Disha Patani, and Raashi Khanna. Merry Christmas is a dark comedy thriller directed by Sriram Raghvan and produced by Matchbox Pictures, in collaboration with Ramesh Taurani's Tips Industries. The latter is a bilingual (Hindi and Tamil) featuring Katrina and Sethupathi.
Both the movies are scheduled to hit theatres on December 15.
