Smooth transition to blended learning at Sister Nivedita University

Moodle, a user-friendly learning management system, provides a convenient interactive platform for students and teachers

COVID-19 has changed the way humans across the world live. It has also changed the way humans teach and learn.

The chalk-and-talk method of teaching has been replaced by online classes in schools, colleges and universities. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are learning on digital platforms. Online learning, according to research, has been seen to increase the capacity to retain information.

Sister Nivedita University (SNU), too, has faced the challenge ably with its very own online Learning Management System (LMS) that caters to the growing demands of students in the most efficient manner.

SNU has done a commendable job in seamlessly integrating classroom learning with its e-learning modes to build a unified learning system. Moodle, the LMS used at the varsity, allows the faculty to create online classes, post assignments, study material and assessment, calculate grades, and more. Students can access the class and resources online, complete assignments, and communicate with the instructor by using their log-in credentials.

After the online class, teachers can also upload their class videos so that if a student misses class, he or she can view the recorded video class at any time.

Assignments can also be given and submitted through Moodle. Teachers can check the assignments and grade them. This makes the assessment transparent. Quizzes and other academic activities can also be conducted on Moodle.

Moodle also supports online examinations and provides a convenient interactive platform between students and teachers. It has helped the university stand beside every student during the pandemic.

Even post COVID-19, many students will continue learning online in some capacity for the following reasons:

Flexible schedule

Students who learn online have a greater chance at flexibility than students in a traditional school setting. For example, instructors may have structured lessons and online class times, but students may be able to complete assignments at their
own pace.

Location independence

Online learning opens up a wide world of possibilities for students, including studying in schools outside their immediate area. The ability to learn from institutions all over the country — and even the world — is an exciting prospect for many students.

Affordability

Online learning can be much less expensive than attending public school. It all comes down to the activities that students are involved in and the course curricula. Parents with younger students engaged in online learning will save money on the supplies they would normally buy for an elementary school classroom throughout the year. Instead, they can save that money or invest it in specific activities their kids are interested in.

Accessibility

Students with special needs can experience an online learning environment and access useful material. While many traditional schools accommodate students with special needs, parents can oversee the learning environment at home.

Parental guidance and increased safety

Online learning also opens the door for increased parental involvement in the education process. Parents can help their students with assignments, comprehension, and review. In the near future, parents and students will have more readily available access to online learning than ever before. This will open up a wide range of educational and career opportunities for students from every walk of life.
