Meet the speakers:
Dr. Urmimala Sarkar Munsi, Associate Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies, School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi: Urmimala was just five when she joined the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre as a student and went on to become a part of the performing troupe while in middle school. She continued to perform and travel across the world with Amala Shankar till college. Her Ph.D. research was in anthropology. Urmimala has specialized in dance studies, visual anthropology, and ethnographic research. Her current work focuses on changing the landscapes of dance in India for women who have survived trafficking and violence and examining the politics of performance in gender, labor, identities, and hierarchies. She is currently the president of World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific. Her auto-ethnographical essay, Revisiting Being Rama: Playing a God in Changing Times, is being published by Oxford University Press, New York, and her manuscript on Uday Shankar and his dance has also been accepted for publication.
Tanusree Shankar, dancer, and choreographer: A dancer of international repute, Shankar is the choreographer and chief inspiration of the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company. After training for seven years under Amala Shankar, she developed her own unique style of choreography that gives concrete shape to the music inspiring it and is based on the Uday Shankar style of dance. She has handled the choreography for several prestigious international conferences, festivals, and mega-events, and is the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 2011, for her contribution towards Creative and Experimental Dance. She is committed to sharing her experiences in academia, through masterclasses at premier institutions such as Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, and workshops in Reading for the WOMAD Festival, Birmingham and Leeds in the UK, and for BA 2 students at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, UK. She heads the Tanusree Shankar Dance Academy and has also acted in several films, including Aparajita Tumi, Hemanter Pakhi, and The Namesake.
Piya Chakraborty, Secretary, HEDS (Moderator): Chakraborty wears multiple hats as a sociologist, social worker, and academic researcher. She is currently also engaged in the activities of HEDS (Health and Ecodefence Society), a non-governmental organization committed to the causes of public health and environmental awareness. After completing her bachelor's, master's, and MPhil degrees in sociology and social sciences, she served as a researcher in an international sociological research project conducted by Umeå University, Sweden. Her academic research has covered issues of diasporic identity, multiculturalism, and labor studies, and her interests also lie in the fields of gender, mental health, and contemporary politics, both local and global. She is a member and spokesperson for CitizenspeakIndia, a civil society forum of artists, activists, and scholars, dedicated to the causes of democracy, free speech, and social inclusion.
Mrs. Manoshi Roy Chowdhury, Co-Chairman, Techno India Group, with her determination, power of patience, and passion has conquered great heights to emerge successfully.
