Tracing Pali- ‘Bhasa’ of Buddhist scriptures & official language of Ashoka’s court

Pali, the Indo-Aryan language, was much simpler than Sanskrit. How did it die out as a literary language in mainland India.

The easiest way to trace the origin of any language is to identify if the language is named after a region or a population. For instance, Gujarati from Gujarat or Tamil from Tamil Nadu. But, it's not the case for Pali. It was spoken was the official language of the Mauryan court during Emperor Ashoka's reign.

Pali was the ancient Middle Indo-Aryan language, in which scriptures of the Theravada school of Buddhism, were preserved and passed on.
