After being unceremoniously dropped by Sunrisers Hyderabad during the recently concluded Indian Premier League, David Warner is back to doing what he does best -- taking the bowlers to the cleaners.

And, you never know, he might end up reaping the benefits of peaking at the right time during the ongoing T20 World Cup.

The Aussie opener, who on Thursday ruled social media for smashing a maximum off a double-bounce ball versus Pakistan, is one big innings away from breaking Virat Kohli's record of scoring the most runs in a single edition of the mega event.

Having scored 236 runs from six outings, Warner is by far the most favourable batter to surpass Kohli's milestone of 319 runs in a single edition. Those above Warner in the current runs tally are Jos Buttler (269), Mohammad Rizwan (281) and Pakistan captain Babar Azam (303). All three of them will longer pad up in this tournament as Australia and New Zealand limber up for the summit showdown on Sunday.

Back in 2014, Kohli had surpassed Tilakaratne Dilshan's record of 317 runs, set in 2009. Seven years on, this record stands unbroken. But with Warner regaining form, such milestones don't seem too far.

Kohli has been in the news since India played their last match of the tournament versus Namibia. After stepping down as captain in the shortest format, he has been rested for the upcoming T20Is versus the Black Caps, and will resume from the second match of the subsequent Test series.

Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri grabbed eyeballs on Friday by talking about Kohli’s future. Speaking on his longevity as skipper, he said, “The same might happen with white ball cricket, he might say he has had enough and he focuses on Test captaincy. It is his mind and body that will make that decision. He won't be the first. A lot of successful players have given up captaincy to focus on their batting for their side."
