Until recently, brown voices in Western pop culture were largely caricaturish depictions of Indian immigrants arriving in the USA, crafted by white people. In the last few years, we’ve come a long way from the cringefest that was Apu from The Simpsons, with many brown creators telling authentic stories about their identity, and its connection with geography. Prime Video seems to be committed to exploring this experience with depth in their upcoming comedy series, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh. Starring veteran names like Naveen Andrews and Sindhu Vee, the trailer of the show gives us a glimpse of what it is like for a textbook Indian family of five to move to the West, and grapple with the contrast between the two cultures. Be it the teenaged daughter exploring dating or the adolescent son obsessed with becoming an American, the concerned mother trying to hold her own in a foreign country, or the helpless father struggling with an unfamiliar work setup, the show promises to capture the experiences of hundreds of desi families. An autobiographical account of executive producer Vijal Patel’s life, this show is sure to appeal to audiences with its authenticity. Make sure to binge through this breezy eight-episode series upon its premiere on October 17!
