Tired of discussing the same old shows with your friends? This
Friendship Day, watch some new ones with them, in order to have your mind blown
together. My Kolkata presents to you a special thriller watchlist to
binge with your buddies!
1. Dark Matter (Apple TV+):
Adapted from the sci-fi novel by Blake Crouch, this show follows a
Chicago-based physicist fighting to return to his reality, before an alternate
version of himself takes over his family. In an age where the ‘alternate
reality’ concept feels exhausted, Dark Matter manages to bring renewed
freshness to it, with intelligent writing and excellent VFX!
2. Severance (Apple TV+): This
critically acclaimed show examines the mean world of biotechnology and its
manipulation of employees. The premise follows a huge corporation that
separates its employees’ work and outside memories, creating compliant people
who can be exploited into furthering a grand conspiracy.
3. Murder in Mahim (Jio Cinema): Based
on Jerry Pinto’s eponymous book, this show is set against the backdrop of a
murder in Mumbai’s seedy underbelly. Vijay Raaz and Ashutosh Rana make every
frame come alive, as the heart-stopping drama explores the challenges faced by
the LGBTQIA+ community.
4. Bad Cop (Hotstar): An
adaptation of the German show with the same name, Bad Cop follows two
brothers, who are caught on opposite sides of the law. The show explores the
duality of human existence, and how deep down, we all have shades of grey.
Bonus: Director Anurag Kashyap gets a chance to show off his acting
chops.
5. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Prime Video): Based on the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie,
this show has Donald Glover and Maya Erskine essaying the roles of two
secret agents, who get tied into an arranged marriage due to their work. Not
only does the show significantly expand the universe of the original film, but
also trades its grandeur for nuance, without compromising on the action.
