Srijit Mukherji’s next project is an adaptation of Bratya Basu’s popular play, Winkle Twinkle, for the silver screen. The director announced the project, unveiling the official poster of the film on social media, but keeping the lead cast under wraps. The poster shows a broken statue of Vladimir Lenin facing the camera, and two young men facing the Russian political figure. The film is produced by Friends Communications, with whom Srijit worked in Padatik — based on the life of filmmaker Mrinal Sen. This is not the first time that Srijit will be adapting a play into cinema. His film Zulfiqar was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
Winkle Twinkle was directed by Debesh Chattopadhyay on stage, and the cast included Debshanker Halder, Rajatava Dutta, Shyamal Chakrabarty, Ranajit Chakrabarty, among others. The play narrates the tale of a father-son duo. The father, Sabyasachi Sen (played by Debshankar), was a political activist who disappeared from police custody in 1976. He remerged, like Rip Van Winkle, only to find a changed political and social diaspora. His son, Indra (played by Rajatava), being a part of a political party with opposite ideology of his father stirred a multi-layered interpersonal dynamics in them.
You can watch the play here, waiting for Srijit’s cinema to hit the screens.
