After coming out with their EP, Red, on December 31, Driftwood — aka Nabanita Sarkar and Atandra Chakraborty — has released a music video for the track Coco Drank, which is from the EP. The electronic-jazz-pop duo is seen in a vibrant background, giving beach-y vibes to a catchy guitar riff.

The two musicians from different spectrums combine retro, futurism, modem EDM elements and jazz hop into a distinct electronic sound which is noticeable in their release while the song ridicules hyper consumerism. Here’s what the duo — formed during the pandemic — has to say.

How did you put Coco Drank together?

The main guitar riff is one of the oldest ideas we utilised. It was on the shelf for a while till we bounced ideas off each other during the break brought on by the pandemic and we got it all together over the Net.

The song has a bubbly feel because of the video.

Yes, the video kind of ridicules pandemic-induced hyper-consumerism. Now, more than ever, we are stuck at home, dependent on virtual entertainment: Just bored out of our minds, making no real connections. The video explored this phenomenon by taking up an inanimate object and anthropomorphising it. Our concept was fuelled by Indranil, Sritanu, Sumit and Aritra from Studio Photoscope Films. It was fun to shoot the video.

How long did you work on the EP (Red)?

We worked on Red for a year with Bloo (their EP) simultaneously. We had planned to release Red earlier in 2021 but the second wave hit us, which delayed our plans.

What made you produce this EP and what does it stand for?

We wanted a “throwback to the music we grew up with” and concoct them into our more contemporary inspirations. Since we both have a menagerie of listening repertoire and we had Nirmit from FatCat productions mastering the songs, I guess something fresh came out of our vision.

How many songs are there on the EP and how many more videos to come?

There are five songs in the EP, which are actually bite-sized scopes into our ever-present musical journey. So a lot more to come.

What about upcoming releases?

We are collaborating with musicians and our friends for the next album, which explores a new look at jazz standards in a more contemporary aspect. We are also working on a short, continuous mix where we plan to get music videos done for all the songs.
