A 27-year-old youth was allegedly assaulted by a group of men while he was standing in a queue for an autorickshaw at the Chingrighata crossing after watching a derby at the Salt Lake stadium on Saturday night.

Police said the youth had protested when some men allegedly abused some passengers, including a few elderly women, after jumping the queue to board an auto.

Two men have been arrested.

Anirban Das, a clinical research coordinator at the NRS Medical College and Hospital, said on Sunday that the assault had left him with a fractured nose.

He was on his way home to Beleghata after watching the football match on Saturday night when he was allegedly attacked.

Soon after he protested, two men showered blows on him, while a third kept kicking his face repeatedly after he fell down, Das said.

As Das lay on the ground with blood oozing out of his nose, some of the people in the queue rushed to his help.

Police arrived later.

Officers first took Das to Beleghata police station and then to a nursing home, where he was given basic medical aid. He was discharged with the advice to consult an ENT specialist.

Das later went to an ENT specialist, who told him that his nasal bone had fractured and one part of it had landed on another.

“The doctor said the fracture has to be repaired through surgery,” Das said.

“It was around 10.30pm when I joined the queue, which was quite long. There were much fewer autos compared with the demand.”

About half an hour later, he said, some men jumped the queue to board an auto.

“The youths were drunk and they tried to book an auto for a particular destination,” Das said.

A number of passengers, including a few women, who had been waiting for an auto for a long period protested at the men’s conduct.

“The men were furious and started abusing the passengers, including a few aged women.”

“I asked them to behave decently with the aged women. ‘Galagali dicchen kyano (Why are you abusing),’ I told them. Suddenly, two of the youths attacked me. My glasses broke as I fell on the road. I was bleeding from my nose,” Das said.

“After I fell, one of them kicked me continuously in my face. The police arrived some15 minutes later.”

“Two men were arrested on Sunday. They are in their late 20s. One of them, Aniket Kara, is a resident of Bidhannagar. The other, Rana Samadder is from Baruipur,” said an officer.
