On this day, a devastating fire destroyed Bourne & Shepherd, the Indian photographic studio that was one of the oldest and most successful commercial photographic establishments in the world.
It had been established in 1863.
Bourne & Shepherd had many agencies in several parts of India and outlets in London and Paris.
Its archive contained photographs of immense value, but a large portion of these was destroyed in the fire.
The effects of the fire, the studio’s battle with the LIC over possession of the studio building on SN Banerji Road, and later, the challenges from digital photography, forced Bourne & Shepherd to close down in 2016.
