None of them were wearing helmets, the police said. Jeet Sardar, 16, a resident of Purba Putiari, was flung around 60 metres away after the scooter hit the tree, cops said.

Pillion riders Akash Pramanick, 17, and Mangal Roy, 16, were rescued by residents of the area.

“I was alarmed by faint cries for help and stepped out of the house to find one of the injured boys crying for water,” said Parul Sardar, a resident.

Pramanick and Sardar died on the spot and were declared brought dead at MR Bangur Hospital. Roy suffered a limb fracture.

He was discharged later.

Doctors told the police Sardar and Pramanick had suffered multiple head and chest injuries.

Roy possibly survived because he was seated on the rear end of the scooter, officers said.
