“We do not want to identify them by names as this may lead to further tension,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.

Police sources said the man arrested from Dhanbad was a resident of Watgunge. An officer of the detective department said the police have evidence against him suggesting that he was part of a conspiracy that was hatched in a bungalow close to Ekbalpore police station.

“He is extremely active in the Watgunge area and enjoys political clout from local leaders. He had been missing from the neighbourhood after the incidents on Sunday. We could zero in on him based on specific information from sources. He has been brought to Kolkata on transit remand,” said an officer in Lalbazar.

A clash broke out between two groups over the alleged tearing down of a religious flag in the area on Sunday.

The accused have been charged under sections of arson, rioting, causing a breach of peace and criminal conspiracy.

The two men were produced in court on Friday and remanded in police custody till October 19.
