As many as 2,000 students of Jadavpur University have said they have got only one shot of a Covid vaccine and 800 have said they haven’t taken a single shot.
The findings of the survey that the university carried out have been shared with the higher education department, which had sought reports from colleges and universities on the status of vaccination among students.
JU teachers told vice-chancellor Suranjan Das on Tuesday that the use of masks should be made mandatory for attending in-person classes and that “most of the students who are visiting the campus now are not wearing masks”.
Partha Pratim Roy, the general secretary of the teachers’ association, who was asked by the university to oversee the survey, said 5,500 students responded between Friday and Monday.
According to Roy, it seems that a sizeable number of the respondents could not be vaccinated because of erratic supply of doses, which has been hobbling the jab drive across Bengal.
VC Das told The Telegraph: “We hope the (state education) department will do the needful.”
The department had last week started the exercise of seeking details of vaccination from campuses before it could decide on reopening colleges and universities after the Puja.
An official of the education department said they wanted all college and university students to be fully vaccinated before reopening the campuses.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had said last month that her government was keen to reopen schools and colleges after Diwali if the Covid situation remained under control.
A JU teacher said if campuses were reopened, it had to be ensured that all students followed the Covid protocols, including wearing of masks.
A memorandum the teachers handed to the VC on Tuesday says: “They (teachers) also feel that nobody should be allowed into physical classes without masks…. Most of the students who are visiting the campus now are not wearing masks.”
Roy said: “If the classes are to be held, the students have to observe the safety norms. They cannot endanger the health of others anywhere.”
