Jadavpur University held a vaccination camp for students with disabilities on Friday.

Eighteen students who are members of the Forum for Students with Disability took the first dose of Covishield at the Tequip Building, said university officials.

The students hired a vehicle to reach the campus. “The cost will be reimbursed,” said JU registrar Snehamanju Basu. The university arranged for their journey back.

Among the 18, 16 students suffer from visual impairments and the other two have locomotor disabilities.

Once the students arrived on the campus, they were taken to the vaccination centre on battery-driven vehicles that the university had purchased for them in 2014.

Somen Datta, who suffers from visual impairments, said they were unsure of standing in a queue for jabs.

“Maintaining physical distance is also a problem. But we did not face any such hassles here on the campus,” said Dutta.

Jishu Debnath, who also suffers from visual impairments, said that since many of them lacked smartphones, they did not know how to register on the CoWIN portal.

“The university got the students who went to the campus registered,” said Debnath.

He could not visit the university on Friday as local train service is yet to start.

Registrar Basu said they would hold another camp for those who could not make it on Friday. “The university has been taking steps to protect its students with disabilities amid the pandemic. In January, we provided funds to 22 visually impaired students so they can stay at rented places with good Internet connection to attend online classes,” she said.

Since the campus was closed in March last year following the Covid outbreak, these students had been staying at home.
