Officers investigating the twin murders on Kankulia Road off Golpark in south Kolkata are scanning CCTV footage and call details of Subir Chaki to track the assassins, who the sleuths suspect had come prepared to kill him and his driver.
Chaki, 61, managing director of Kilburn Engineering Ltd, and driver Rabin Mondal, 65, were found murdered in the Kankulia Road house of the Chakis on Sunday night.
Police said Chaki, who lived in New Town with his wife and mother, had planned to sell the Golpark property and went there on Sunday evening to meet a prospective buyer.
Sleuths have collected call details of Chaki’s mobile phone and identified some of the callers who were not directly related to him but called him frequently between Friday and Sunday.
“The victim’s WhatsApp was on till 6.17pm, around 47 minutes after he reached the Kankulia Road house,” said an officer.
One team is monitoring the numbers from Chaki’s call records and another is scanning footage of CCTV cameras on the road outside the house.
The investigators are focussing on the footage captured between 5.30pm, when Chaki reached the house, till the two were killed around 9pm.
The house of the Chakis has a CCTV camera.
On Tuesday, sniffer dogs of the police made a round of the house before walking towards Ballygunge railway station, leading investigators to suspect that the assassins had taken the train route to flee.
“It appears those who went to meet Chaki had the intention to kill him and his driver. Sharp weapons were used to kill the two,” said an officer.
Preliminary reports of the post-mortem state Chaki suffered deep cuts on his neck and leg and Mondal suffered similar injuries on his back, neck and leg.
“Chaki had told his wife and mother that he was going to Kankulia Road to meet a prospective buyer. So the Sunday evening meeting was not impromptu,” the officer said.
The police have found documents related to the Kankulia Road property inside the Mercedes that Chaki rode to the house.
Officers said Chaki also owned an apartment in Urbana, a residential complex near Ruby General Hospital. He had spent some time at the complex during the Puja.
Investigators have spoken to Chaki's family members and colleagues to know whether he had received any threat calls.
