The managing director of Kilburn Engineering Ltd and his driver were found dead with injury marks on Sunday night in a house owned by the IIT-IIM alumnus near Golpark in south Kolkata, police said on Monday.

Subir Chaki, the Kilburn managing director, was 61. His driver Robin Mondal was 65.

Chaki’s body was found on the first floor of the house he owned on Kankulia Road, while Mondal’s body was recovered from the second floor of the three-storey building. Their necks, wrists and legs had sharp cuts.

The police said Chaki had been trying to sell the house for the past year-and-a-half, and may have gone there to meet a prospective buyer.

Officers of Kolkata police’s detective department said they had started a murder case, and the suspected murder could be related to the property.

Chaki, a mechanical engineer from IIT Kharagpur and an MBA from IIM Calcutta, had been living in a New Town apartment with his wife and mother for more than six years, the police said.

Security guards at the residential complex in New Town have told the police that Chaki left the compound around 3.40pm on Sunday in a white Mercedes-Benz.

The car is registered with Kilburn Engineering, promoted by the Khaitans, the police said. Chaki had joined the company in October 2017 and become managing director in April 2018.

When Chaki failed to return at night, his family tried to call him and found that his mobile phone was switched off.

“They then called a relative who lives near the Kankulia Road house. Then they called Gariahat police station,” a senior officer of the detective department said.

A team from Gariahat police station went to the house, broke open the door which was locked from inside, and found Chaki lying on the floor of a first-floor room.
