Fourteen persons have been arrested. “Eight are employees of the company and agents, arrested in Kolkata. Six others, including the directors, have been arrested from Nashik,” an officer at Lalbazar said.

The officer said Mukherjee ran an NGO named Save the Barefoot, which has its registered office on Suresh Sarkar Road in central Kolkata’s Entally area. The company had cheated people of crores of rupees, the police said.

“Three complaints have been received at Beniapukur, Karaya and Entally police stations. It is alleged that the directors of a company or NGO called Save The Barefoot have cheated the complainants by inducing them to invest in schemes with a promise of high returns. In the last few days, they found that the office was shut and the directors were unreachable,” said the officer.
