The New Town authorities have started building a school near the Rabindra Tirtha intersection.
A senior official of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) said they were building an English-medium high school that they will run with the state education department.
The complex will have two towers, a football field and other open spaces. Three plots measuring around 2 acres have been earmarked for the school and a budget of Rs 31.3 crore has been allocated for it.
NKDA chairman Debashis Sen said there was a long-standing demand for a government school in New Town. “We have started laying the foundation... We will work closely with the state education department that will handhold this project,” he said.
An NKDA official said it would take at least 24 months for the completion of the building. “The school will be equipped with smart classrooms and a host of sporting activities,” the official said.
Samaresh Das of New Town Forum and News, a residents’ body, said: “We have private schools but having a good government school in the area will help us in many ways.”
