On a day the Met office had predicted the weather would improve, it rained heavily in Kolkata and its neighbouring areas.
Between Tuesday morning and evening, the Met office recorded around 65mm of rain in Alipore, 105mm in Salt Lake and 130mm in Dum Dum.
More than 60mm of rain in 24 hours qualifies as heavy in Met parlance.
The weather in Kolkata is likely to improve from Wednesday afternoon, the Met office said.
A deep depression moving towards Odisha from the Bay of Bengal was tipped to trigger heavy rain in Kolkata on Monday.
But a cloudy sky and light rain was all the city got because the system hit land around 200km further away from Kolkata than where it was supposed to.
The Met office had said the weather in Kolkata would gradually improve from Tuesday.
A Met official attributed the mismatch between the forecast and actual rain to the position of the monsoon trough.
“The system weakened into a depression as it kept moving into the interiors of Odisha and Chhattisgarh. But the monsoon trough was passing right over Kolkata on its way to the Bay on Tuesday,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.
“The trough drew clouds towards coastal Bengal. The clouds fed on moisture and most of them became so heavy by the time they came near the city that they could not move any further and emptied themselves,” said Das.
