Sheikh Nasim Akhtar, Himanshu Karmakar and Satyabrata Roy, who are among the 12 who have been arrested for the alleged murder, were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate, Alipore, on Thursday.

The court sent them to judicial custody till September 8. The remaining nine are already in judicial remand.

The lawyers appearing for the accused said they were summoned by the police and then arrested. The public prosecutor said many current and former students were summoned but only a handful were arrested. The police, he said, arrested them only after their alleged role in the case emerged.

The defence lawyers said all the youths in custody “are good students”.

The public prosecutor countered: “They are good students but mean at heart.”
