A man who works as the driver of a judge in a city court has been arrested for allegedly cheating several persons with false promises of getting them government jobs.

Nabin Das was arrested from his wife’s paternal home at Haridevpur on the southern fringes of Kolkata on Sunday, after a complaint of cheating was lodged against him for allegedly failing to provide a job in the public works department. He allegedly accepted Rs 4 lakh from the complainant, a resident of Watgunge.

The complainant told police that Das had taken Rs 4 lakh from him but did not get him a job in the PWD.

The police said a motorcycle belonging to Das was seized. A logo of Kolkata police was allegedly found on the bike.

“On further examination we found he had also cheated several Bangladeshi nationals with false promises of extending their visas during their stay in Kolkata. He was also running a business of forging identity documents,” said an officer of the detective department which took up the investigation of the case.

An investigating officer said on examining Das’s bank accounts they have found several lakhs of rupees whose source he allegedly failed to explain to the cops.

Senior police officers not involved in the case said this was a dangerous trend where government employees or people indirectly attached to government offices were flaunting their “contacts” to cheat others. “People should not fall into such traps. One should know that you cannot get into a public service through gratification,” said a senior police officer.

Das has been remanded in police custody.
