Movement of vehicles on nine south Kolkata roads will be barred from Friday till Sunday for all except residents and personnel associated with the civic polls.
The roads are Ballygunge Circular Road (between Ballygunge Phari and Gurusaday Road), Ritchie Road, Beltala Road, Palit Street, Dover Road, Deodar Street, Chakraberia Road, Lovelock Place and Puddapukur Road.
Vehicles of residents of these streets will be allowed after necessary verifications, police said.
Movement of vehicles on these nine thoroughfares will be again restricted on December 21, the day the results will be declared.
Parking of vehicles other than those connected to polls will be banned on 10 major arteries across Kolkata from Friday till Sunday.
“Police officers will be posted on these thoroughfares in south Kolkata to enforce the restriction,” said an officer.
“Residents needn’t worry. There will be a system in place to check their identities and allow them to travel.”
Vehicles headed for Ballygunge Circular Road from Gariahat Road will be diverted through Gurusaday Dutta Road and Garcha Road towards Hazra Road.
The area around Ballygunge High School on Beltala Road, adjoining Ballygunge police station and David Hare Training College, will be left clear so that buses and other vehicles deployed on poll duty can be allowed to park here, officers said.
“There will be several checkpoints because this area is extremely sensitive and no one other than those on poll duty will be allowed,” said an officer overseeing poll arrangements.
“The police headquarters in Lalbazar has already drawn up a list of personnel who will be exclusively scanning identities of all personnel in Ballygunge and at a few other centres, including Jodhpur Park, Acropolis Mall and Behala.”
The police have decided that the minibus stand at Jodhpur Park will be shifted to Golf Green and several restrictions will be put in place.
Jodhpur Park First Lane and Jodhpur Park Second Lane will remain “one way” from Friday till Sunday.
Similar restrictions on traffic movement will also be in place for vehicles heading towards Acropolis mall on Rashbehari Connector.
The road behind the mall and Gitanjali Stadium will remain one-way, while vehicles intending to move towards the Rashbehari connector from DPS School will be diverted through lanes and bylanes.
No other vehicles except those of the residents will be allowed to go towards DPS School from the Siemens crossing on the Rashbehari connector.
In southewst Kolkata’s Behala, Biren Road Road East, between James Long Sarani and Diamond Harbour Road, will be closed and the autorickshaw stand near Vivekananda College will be shifted to Diamond Harbour Road.
