An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said Bose had visited the police station on October 26 to lodge a complaint.

“Bose told us that the balance in his bank account had reduced though he had not withdrawn money,” the officer said.

Bose is unemployed and earns his livelihood by renting out a portion of his house in AD Block, the officer said.

The officer on duty asked Bose for documents such as the passbook of the account.

“He was told that he would be handed a list of documents that he needed to produce with the complaint. He was asked to wait in the lobby outside till he was given the list,” the officer said.

“In the lobby was lying the backpack of a civic volunteer. As no one else was in the lobby, Bose opened the bag, took the money and left,” said another officer.

After the civic volunteer told his colleagues that money was missing from his bag, the officers checked CCTV footage and found a man resembling Bose removing money from the bag, the officer said.

Bose was picked up from his house.
