Manish Gupta, who was riding the scooter, said the compact SUV in front of him suddenly lost control and rammed into the railing.

“I did not get any time to react. It appeared that the person driving the SUV could not decide which flank to take,” said Gupta, a resident of Beleghata, who said he was going to Alipore for work.

A woman was at the wheel. She was helped out of the car by other motorists who stopped seeing the crash. Then the police helped her out of the flyover. “She is safe,” an officer of the traffic department said.

The cops said the crash happened around 3.15pm when the Kia Sonet that was moving from the EM Bypass-end of the flyover towards the city apparently lost control. “The car was moving at a high speed and apparently the person at the wheel failed to negotiate the speed. The compact SUV rammed into the railing of the flyover and overturned. A scooter was just behind the car. It hit the car,” said the traffic cop.

A senior police officer said a major accident was averted as there were a few vehicles plying through that flank at the time of the crash.

“It is always advisable to maintain a gap between vehicles. This can prevent major accidents. In this case, the scooter was not moving at a very high speed. Else, the rider would have been seriously hurt,” said the senior officer.

Traffic on the city-bound flank of the flyover was stalled for around 10 minutes before the car was removed with the help of a tow vehicle.

The vehicle was seized. It will undergo a test to ascertain whether there was a mechanical failure that triggered the crash.
