A biker who was allegedly fleeing after snatching a gold chain from the neck of a woman was chased and intercepted by police at Sarsuna in southwest Kolkata’s Behala area.
The police said the snatching happened around 3pm on Tuesday when Sima Banerjee, a resident of Sarsuna Satellite Township, was returning home on foot.
The locality she was walking through is dotted with residential buildings but is relatively deserted in the afternoon.
After the biker snatched her gold chain and tried to flee Banerjee raised the alarm. A police patrol in the neighbourhood heard her screams.
“A motorcycle patrol started chasing the biker and intercept him after a kilometre. The chain was recovered from the biker,” said an officer of Sarsuna police station.
The police have identified the accused as Sumanta Rudra, 26, a resident of Thakurpukur in southwest Kolkata.
Officers said they were checking if there were more criminal cases against Rudra.
A senior officer said it was important for women to raise the alarm if they are under attack.
“Many cases of women harassment go unreported as victims fail to muster courage against their perpetrators,” said the officer.
