A civic volunteer and a contractual driver of Kolkata police vehicles have been arrested for allegedly snatching a chain and Rs 5,000 from the driver of a pick-up van parked on Strand Road in west Kolkata on Tuesday midnight.
The two accused — identified as Sheikh Akbar and Sheikh Jamir Mondal, both attached with Park Circus traffic guard — had allegedly come in a police vehicle and assaulted Rajkumar Das before snatching his belongings, including his identity documents, driving licence, a silver chain and Rs 5,000.
CCTV footage helped the police identify the men and track down the vehicle at Park Circus traffic guard, an officer said.
Sources said Akbar, a former drug addict who was given the job of a civic volunteer, has been removed from police duty.
Mondal’s service has been terminated, an officer said.
