The five have been arrested and charged with abetment to suicide, officers at Baguiati police station said.

“In the note the woman mentioned five persons — three employees of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and a couple from Rajarhat. The note says they were troubling the woman and her brother, asking them to pay back around Rs 40 lakh that they said the brother owed to them. On Sunday, when the brother wasn’t there, they allegedly came to the flat and made her sign some documents,”

The bodies of Gopa Roy, 46, and daughter Sudeshna, 22, a college student, were found on the floor of their bedroom. Gopa’s elder sister, who is bedridden with a neurological condition, was in another room and unaware of the deaths, the police said.

According to cops, Gopa, a divorcee, had been lived in the flat with her daughter, brother and sister on rent for one-and-a-half years. On Sunday, Gopa’s brother Goutam Dey was reportedly at Tarapith with friends.

“The woman’s brother said he had called Gopa and Sudeshna multiple times on Sunday but they didn’t answer, following which he asked a security guard at the building to check on them. The guard pushed open the wooden door behind a locked collapsible gate on Monday morning and found the two lying on the floor,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar city police.

“He immediately alerted the building’s committee members, who alled Baguiati police station. Our officers rushed to the flat and opened the lock and find the two unconscious with froth at their mouths. They were taken to the nearest hospital, where they were pronounced dead.”
