Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced that the government will help all the Ukraine-returnee students resume their studies.
In a formal meet with the students at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra near Maidan, the chief minister said all engineering students will be able to continue their studies in Bengal. The Bengal government will also put a cap on the fees for the continuation of their course here.
Intern doctors, who were practising in Ukraine, will be offered to finish their internship in government medical colleges, the CM said. She also said that the interns will be offered a stipend from the Bengal government.
For fourth, fifth and sixth-year medical students, the Bengal government will write to the medical commission seeking permission for them to practise here as interns.
For first-year medicos who had just begun their studies, the CM said the government will try to get special permission for them to begin their course here.
The second and third-year students can also choose to begin their course afresh but the government will also approach the medical commission seeking permission for these students to continue their studies in Bengal from where they left off in Ukraine.
The chief minister also said that if the students are allowed to take admission in private colleges, they will have to pay fees at the government rate. The state government will bear half of the extra fees as scholarship.
The Ukraine-returnee students had written a letter to the CM seeking an audience. The meet was organised in response to the request from the students. There are 391 students including 11 medical interns who returned from Ukraine to Bengal, the chief minister said.
