A 70-year-old man’s body was found in the common area of his housing complex in New Town on Wednesday, police said.

An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said that they received an alert from the Greenwood Park housing complex that Rup Kumar Choudhury was lying in a pool of blood. The security guards’ attempts to revive him had failed.

Choudhury was last seen standing on a ledge on the 10th floor for a few seconds before he stepped off the ledge, an officer said.

A team from the New Town police station went to the complex. The cops took Choudhury to the Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital in Salt Lake where he was declared dead.

Choudhury used to stay in a first-floor apartment with his wife Sikha. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the couple used to stay alone and both their sons were settled abroad.

“Choudhury had been on medication for depression for a long time,” the officer said. “We have sent the body for post-mortem to find the exact cause of death. We have started a case of unnatural death,” the officer said.
