A 45-year-old lawyer jumped to his death from one of the floors of the 19-storey Jeevan Sudha building on JL Nehru Road in the city’s central business district on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
A suicide note found in his pocket suggested that Utpal Roy was in financial distress, the police said.
“Roy, a resident of Shyama Prasad Pally at Purba Putiary in the Regent Park area, jumped off the building at 42/C JL Nehru Road around 4.15pm,” an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station said.
He was declared dead at SSKM Hospital.
“We found a note in his pocket. It was apparent from the note that he was in a financial crisis. He had also sent a WhatsApp message to his wife before committing suicide,” the officer said.
Last week, a city businessman had died after falling from the 11th floor of a highrise on Loudon Street.
The police suspect he had committed suicide unable to tide over the losses his business had suffered.
