A 52-year-old woman from Duttabad, bordering Salt Lake, died of dengue at Salt Lake Sub-divisional Hospital, where she was admitted on Monday.
Pratima Mandal had been running a temperature and suffering from breathing problem when son Subhas took her to the hospital, an official at the government healthcare unit said.
Subhas said his wife and sister-in-law, too, were admitted to the hospital with
dengue.
Mandal’s death is the second dengue death reported from the area under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC). A few weeks ago, a resident of AE Block of Salt Lake died of
dengue.
On Thursday, Subhas said his mother had been down with fever for a couple of days before she was admitted to hospital.
“We had taken her to a
doctor and he advised a dengue test. Before we could get her tested, her temperature soared and she developed breathing problem,” Subhas said.
Banibrata Banerjee, mayoral council member in charge of health at the BMC, said the Mandals live in Ward 39, a
part of Duttabad that is close to the Labony Island in Salt Lake.
“Pratima Mandal had tested positive for dengue and was admitted to the dengue ward of the hospital, where she died,” said Banerjee.
The number of dengue cases in the area under the BMC, which has 41 wards, breached the 2,000-mark this year, an official in the civic health department said.
Cluster infections are also being reported from Duttabad, Baguiati, Ashwininagar, Chinar Park and several Salt Lake blocks.
