A 30-year-old resident of Santoshpur in southeast Kolkata died of dengue at the Peerless Hospital on Friday morning, doctors said.
Rohit Das had tested positive for dengue and died because of post-dengue complications, said critical care expert Ajoy Sarkar, the doctor who had treated Das.
A number of people have died of dengue in Kolkata and the rest of Bengal this year, but neither the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) nor the state health department has released any figure on the number of deaths.
Several people in and around the city have alleged that vector control work has been very poor this year. They said vector control workers visited after gaps of 15 to 30 days.
An entomologist said that it defeated the purpose of revisiting a place as an egg of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the primary transmitter of the dengue virus, can transform into an adult mosquito in seven days.
Sidhhartha Niyogi, the state’s director of health services, said that 905 dengue cases were reported from across the state on Friday.
A source in the state health department said that about 600 dengue cases were reported in Kolkata for the last seven days till Thursday.
On Friday, mayor Firhad Hakim said that he did not want to comment on whether dengue infections have reduced.
“One day there are lesser cases, the next day the number of cases reported are high. I will not say whether cases have come down or not,” he said.
