Volunteers removed
All civic volunteers posted in hospitals and schools across the city were removed from the establishments on Thursday and replaced by police personnel. The change is in compliance with a Supreme Court order to the state government, officers at the Kolkata police headquarters said. All the divisional deputy commissioners submitted their compliance reports to the office of the joint commissioner of police (headquarters) on Thursday.
Actor-newsreader Debraj Roy dead
Actor-newsreader Debraj Roy breathed his last at a Salt Lake hospital on Thursday evening. He would have turned 70 this December. He is survived by his wife, actor Anuradha Roy. "He had been ailing and bound to a wheelchair since suffering a stroke a few years ago," said Sajal Mitra, his childhood friend. Roy had developed renal problems and was brought to the hospital around six days ago, Mitra said. Roy made his film debut in Satyajit Ray’s Pratidwandi (1970) and also acted in Mrinal Sen’s Calcutta 71 (1971). He also worked with other directors, including Tarun Majumdar and Tapan Sinha. Roy became a household name as a newsreader with Doordarshan. He will be cremated on Friday.
