Andrew Brodie, who has written several maths books and has a dedicated YouTube channel where he posts maths tutorials, is conducting a workshop for kids aged between 8 and 10 years, based on his book Maths Today for ages 9-10, on August 26, organised by Storyteller Bookstore on Zoom.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Andrew said, “In the workshop, we will be practising key skills for rapid and accurate calculations. The children will be able to see the screen on which I will be demonstrating techniques for quick additions, subtractions and multiplications.” He added, “The children do not need to make any preparation prior to attending, as most of them will already be proficient with numerical operations.”
All the kids are required to do is follow his approaches in order to develop greater speed in working with numbers. “Some children will find the calculations quite easy but will benefit from practising calculating quickly while maintaining accuracy. Some children will make mistakes but will benefit from understanding that they can learn from their mistakes, to make improvements in their mathematical performance,” said the author who has years of teaching experience in the primary classroom.
Participants need to keep going back to the knowledge they acquire in the workshop. “After the session, those children, who have my workbooks, will be able to continue with the activities that I will have shown them. All of the students will be able to continue the final activity of the lesson, which will be a large-scale problem-solving activity involving doubling and addition — this activity will start easy but will become very difficult,” said Andrew.
The workshop starts at 4pm.
