Twenty-nine-year-old Ravi Jain, a resident of Jain temple lane in Deoghar district, clinched all India 9th rank in the prestigious UPSC exams in his fourth attempt, sending a wave of excitement in the cultural capital of the state.

Ravi's sustained efforts and focus, despite unsuccessful attempts, helped him crack one of the toughest exams in the country. “Defeats certainly upset one, but the key is to know how to overcome failures and continue ahead,” he said, adding that he always hoped to clear UPSC but didn’t expect to score such a high rank. In his past attempts, Ravi reached up to the interview stage but couldn’t get through.

As the news surfaced, several people turned up at the Jain residence to congratulate the elated family with bouquets.

Ravi is currently working as a sales tax officer in Jamui in Bihar after clearing Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) last year, his father Ashok Jain, a businessman by profession told local reporters. “Even after clearing BPSC last year, he was still hopeful to clear UPSC, and continued to work hard. He has made entire Deoghar proud. We are on cloud nine,” said his father.

Ashok added that his son was under immense tension when the UPSC interviews, earlier scheduled on March 25, were deferred due to the coronavirus lockdown. Finally, the interview was held on July 20.

Ravi is the youngest of four siblings. His three elder sisters are all married. After finishing his class 10th from St Francis school by scoring 85 per cent in 2005, Ravi finished his 12th from Amity International school in Delhi two years later. He then did engineering, and worked in a private firm for three years in the Capital, all along preparing for the Civil Sevices exam.
