Tatanagar railway station will soon boast the Indian Tricolour on a 100-feet-tall flagpole at its parking lot.

“The installation process is underway. The flag is being put up in accordance with the directives of Garden Reach, the headquarters of South Eastern Railway,” Tatanagar station director H.K. Balmuchu said on Thursday.

He said the Railway Protection Force (RPF) would be responsible for the safety and security of the Tricolour.

The Railway Board had issued an order in October last year and forwarded it to all zonal railway authorities asking them to install at least 100-feet-high flags at all the A1 category stations.

Balmuchu said Tatanagar was also set to get two large LED televisions — one at the portico and another at the second-class waiting room on platform 1.

He said the decision for installing the televisions were taken by the Chakradharpur division on Thursday.

“The LED televisions measuring 8ftx5ft have been sanctioned by our headquarters. Both the sets are expected to reach here in another one week or so,” Balmuchu added.

Describing the televisions sets as an addition to the amenities at station, Balmuchu said passengers would be able to view news as well as entertainment channels.

“No other railway station under Chakradharpur division has such large LED televisions,” he said.

Sources in the railway’s commercial department said platform 1 used to have television panels, all of which were removed in 2010 after they developed technical snag.

The Chotanagpur Passenger Association and the railway committee of Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed both the initiatives.

“Installation of national flag will instil a sense of patriotism among people while the giant LED TVs will enable passengers to keep themselves updated with national and international news while they are travelling,” said Arun Tiwari, general secretary of Chotanagpur Passenger Association.
