Two students who were taking their matriculation examination were killed, and four others injured on Saturday at 8pm, when a truck hit them at high speed near Mukunda Hari Mandir Mor under the jurisdiction of Tisra police station, around 15km from the district headquarters.

The six girls were returning home at Mukunda after attending tuition classes at Mukunda Bazar area when the mishap occurred.

A truck from Baliapur travelling to Alakdiha at high speed hit the girls from behind due to which four students — Suman Kumari a.k.a Annu, 16, Anjali Kumari, 15, Radha Rani, 16, and Kumud Kumari, 17, received multiple injuries, and Priyanka Kumari, 16, and Neha Kumari, 16, were also injured.

Police rushed the six injured to Patliputra Medical College and Hospital where Suman Kumari was declared brought dead and Anjali died during the course of treatment.

A large number of irate residents, accompanied by the family members of the deceased, gathered at the spot at 8.30pm and attacked a police team that reached the site to take stock of the situation. Constable Daya Ram received minor injuries in the attack.

The police had to lathicharge to whisk away the mob and take the injured girls to the hospital.

On Sunday more than 1,000 local residents blocked Jharia Baliapur Road near Alakdiha Talab between 8am and 3pm with the bodies, demanding compensation for the family members of the deceased, construction of speed breakers at the incident site and action against the truck owner, as well as regular checking of licences and other credentials of drivers and drink driving.

The blockade was lifted after negotiations among the angry mob, district administration and the police held under the mediation of Sindri MLA Indrajit Mahto. The district administration agreed to provide immediate compensation of Rs 20,000 each to the family members of each of the deceased.

The administration agreed to restrict the operation of heavy vehicles on the Jharia Baliapur Road between 6am and 10pm and also agreed to construct 10 speed-breakers on the Jharia Baliapur Road in areas with dense population and carry out regular checks of licences and drink driving.

MLA Mahto said: “We will take steps to provide adequate compensation to the family members of the deceased girls and at the same time ensure best medical treatment to the injured girls.”
