A speeding trailer, carrying 20 labourers from Jamshedpur to their homes in the two districts of Uttar Pradesh, hit a motorcycle and a stationary truck at the Ranchi-Patna Highway (NH-33) in Ramgarh, killing four men on the spot on Sunday.

Twelve more suffered injuries and were admitted to the Ramgarh Sadar Hospital but doctors referred six of them to RIMS Ranchi seeing their critical condition.

The police said the trailer driver lost control over the vehicle near the Lalki Mor in Chutupalu Ghati (a scenic valley), some 7km from Ramgarh town, and hit a motorcycle killing the rider on the spot.

The motorcyclist was identified as Ayush Anand, 27, who was on his way to his shop in Kankebar. To escape from the spot, the nervous trailer driver Rohit Kumar accelerated and hit a stationary truck a few metres from the first accident site.

After the collision, the trailer, carrying the labourers, tumbled into a roadside ditch, killing driver Rohit and a labourer on the spot. Another labourer later died at the hospital.

Ramgarh sub-divisional police officer Anuj Oraon and Ramgarh police station officer-in-charge Vidya Shankar reached the site and deployed an earthmover to extricate the two bodies trapped under the wheels of the trailer.

The two were identified as Mohammad Shahrukh and driver Rohit.

One of the injured labourers later said that they had paid Rohit, who agreed to take them to their home in Muzzafarnagar and Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh. He said the 20 of them paid the driver Rs 3,000 each.

Quarantine

Ranchi: BJP general secretary Anant Ojha demanded proper quarantine facility for their migrant labourers back home. Most of the migrated labourers are screened by only thermal scanners, Ojha said. Expressing his dissatisfaction, he said that mere thermal scanning to check one’s temperature was not sufficient to confirm whether the person was affected by the novel coronavirus.

Nurse recovers

Ranchi: Locality residents of Harmu welcomed a nurse on Saturday night with flowers and applause after she returned from the RIMS isolation ward after making a full recovery from the novel coronavirus infection. People also promised to express their solidarity with healthcare workers.
